Our Love Story
Brittany and Alex’s story began in August 2012. It was the start of Brittany’s second year at McMaster, and she had again made the Mac women’s softball team.
“Hi Mom.”
“Hey Britt. How was practice?"
“Good. I think we’re going to have a good team this year. The new girls are really nice. "Hey, can we go home before we go to the bank? I’m really sweaty, and I don’t want that cute bank teller to see me like this.”
“Really! No, we’re going to stop on the way home.”
Brittany looked in the mirror and brushed her hair back into a pony tail.
When they arrived at the bank, Brittany said “He’s here! We have to try to get him.” And by magic he called out, "Next.”
“Hey there. What can I do for you?”
Brittany quickly took a look at his name tag. “I need a certified cheque to pay my tuition.”
“Oh, where do you go to school?”
“McMaster.”
“Cool, that’s where I go too. What year are you in?”
“Second, you?”
“I’m in my 4th year. What are you taking?”
“Sociology.”
“Do you play ball for Mac?”
“How did you know?”
“Your shirt.”
“Oh ya.”
“I play baseball for Mac too. Well, here’s your cheque. It was a pleasure helping you. Maybe I’ll see you around campus.”
“Oh my God, Mom! He talked to me. Isn’t he cute?”
“He is, Britt. You will have to stalk him at campus this year.”
“Mom!”
It was a quiet Thursday night at the tanning salon Brittany worked at. She finished all her tasks and was doing some reading for her English course. The bell on the door rang, and she looked up. It was him! What was he doing here?
“Hey, we meet again. Sorry, I can’t remember your name.”
“It’s Brittany.”
“Well Brittany, I’m Alex. Can you check if I have anything left on my account.”
“Sure. What’s your last name, Alex?”
“Cabral.”
“You have three sessions left. Did you want to tan tonight?”
“Sure.”
“Right this way.”
I can’t believe he’s here. I have to text Mom.
“All done?"
“Yes.”
“Here, I’ll update your account. Hopefully, I see you next time.”
“Do you want to come to a party at my place this weekend?” Alex asked.
They exchanged numbers.
Brittany never went to that party, and she never ran into Alex until the spring of 2013.
During the 5th inning of Britt’s baseball, Michelle suggested that the team go to Boston Pizza after the game on Main Street for karaoke. Brittany, of course, was in. The girls were giggling when they walked in the door. The place was packed.
“Oh my God guys, Alex is here!” Alex was heading up to the stage. He sang “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. He had a great voice. When he finished and was heading back to his table, Brittany and Alex made eye contact and exchanged a smile.
The next night, Alex texted Britt, “Hey, I have a business called Ace Mobile Detailing. I need some help this weekend. Would you be interested in working for me?”
Britt replied, “Sure. I love cleaning.”
“Great! I can check out your skills. I’ll pick you up Saturday morning!”
Brittany cleaned cars with Alex a few times that summer and always kept his number in her phone. She joked with the baseball team about how she was going to marry him someday.
Alex graduated from Mac and was making plans to move to California. Brittany headed back to Mac for her third year and applied for teachers’ college.
June 2015 came, and Brittany is officially a teacher! Alex returned from California and moved to Oakville, living with his detailing crew and ramping up Ace Mobile Detailing for the summer. On a whim, he called Brittany even though they hadn’t talked for over a year.
“Hey Britt, it’s Alex. Would you want to come clean cars for me this summer?”
“Of course.”
The romance blossomed from there. They spent the summer going to Jays games, Osheaga in Montreal, attending a friend’s wedding, and enjoying summer parties.
Brittany’s family did their annual day at the Toronto CNE. Brittany invited Alex, but he had to work. He texted her throughout the day and asked if she could stop by that night. Alex offered to pick Brittany up at the Oakville Go station on the way back home from the CNE.
The next morning, Brittany was upset.
“Mom, Alex is moving to Vancouver. What am I going to do?”
Alex headed to British Columbia and started working for Telus. He enjoyed exploring the sites and sounds of BC and making new friends.
July 2016 came.
“Mom, I got a text today . . . from Alex. He’s back in Toronto.”
“Really, did you text him back?”
“No, I don’t think I will.”
September 2016 came.
Alex is heading to a boat cruise with friends, and Brittany is on her way to Toronto Island when they bump into each other. They chat for a few minutes and make plans for Brittany to come to Toronto for dinner and catch up. On September 23, 2016, Brittany and Alex went on their first date to Cactus Club in downtown Toronto. They were officially a couple, and their love story continues to this day.
Alex proposed to Brittany on Christmas Day 2021 with a puppy, a gesture that not only stole her heart but also marked the beginning of their marriage journey. Now, their love story continues with Caesar by their side.
